Frequently Asked Questions

What should we wear?

Good styling means that your beautiful faces are the star of the photo.  I am always happy to help with styling one-on-one. Just ask!

Here are a few tips that create a balanced family portrait that you will be excited to display:

  • Mom, start with your outfit.  I recommend a flowy maxi dress in a solid or floral print, with sleeves and a defined waist.  They are flattering and create movement in your images.
  • Choose clothes in which you feel comfortable and attractive – confidence will show up in your portrait!
  • After mom is done, style other ladies in the family - again, I recommend longer dresses to twirl in; or layers, textures and cute boots!
  • Your boys probably already have neutrals in their wardrobe to fill in and compliment.
  • Pull colors from one outfit to the next; choose more solid neutral colors, accenting with prints, textures and colors in muted tones.
  • Choose 1-3 coordinated, not matching, colors to showcase within the entire family.
  • Choose colors in the same family; for example, jewel tones (navy, burgundy, forest green) or lighter tones (olive green, beige, cream).
  • Avoid neon or bright colors - bright turquoise and pinks can reflect on the skin and can be harsh in your final images.
  • Adults look best in sleeves at least to the elbows and long pants or skirts/shorts to the knees – this avoids creating large areas of skin that will draw the viewer’s focus.
  • Add textures and accessorize with scarves, jewelry, hats and belts – feel free to bring some options so we can mix and match!
  • Wear dark socks and shoes – bright white shoes draw your eye.
  • Iron or steam your clothes before the session to remove as many wrinkles as possible. Photoshopping wrinkles can be purchased for an additional fee.
  • Get haircuts at least 2 weeks before your session.
What if my kids don’t cooperate?

I encourage you to not worry about this.  I am a mom and know how kids can display their unique personalities.  My hope is that we can play some games and have a little fun.  Simply, tell your kids that you're going to the park to meet a lady that has a cool camera!

What if sunset is later than my kid's bed time?

I always want to start your session 60-90 minutes before sunset because that is when the light is golden and yummy!  Capturing you in that light is totally worth adjusting bed time for one evening.  Your child is heading to a park to play and meet a new person, they will do great!
If this is still a concern, the sun sets much earlier in the fall months, so plan your session for late September or October.

What if the weather is bad?

If weather is inclement, we will choose another time that works for both of us.  In the event of full cloud-cover, I typically offer the option to reschedule for better light.  I want to deliver amazing images in beautiful light.

Do I get all the pictures?

You will receive edited images that meet my artistic standard, have proper focus and exposure, and your eyes are open.  You're welcome!  I will never withhold quality images from you.  Expect to receive your gallery within 2 weeks of the session.

Where will my session take place?

I live in Farmington, MN and will travel to surrounding areas for outdoor locations. Indoor newborn sessions can be done in my home; or yours.

Can you re-create a picture I saw on Pinterest?

Pinterest is fun, right?  It's great for inspiration, but I am my own artist and you are putting trust in me by hiring me.  Let's relax and let your session flow in an organic way and capture interactions in the moment.

Can you photoshop me?

I will do my best to capture you in the most flattering way.  Retouching is only included if specifically outlined in the session listing, or for additional purchase.  I encourage you to embrace and rejoice in all stages of your life; you will never get this one back.  Let's focus on a positive experience and capturing the connections with your loved ones.

What about props and accessories?
  • Family: I bring a blanket for you to sit on, but don't generally incorporate other props unless you have a special item.
  • Newborn:  I have a large supply of newborn props, wraps and accessories.  You shouldn't need to provide anything unless you have something special you want incorporated.
  • Seniors: I bring a blanket and maybe a chair for you to sit on.  If you have a hobby or interest that you want to showcase, make sure you share that with me ahead of your session.
